SUMMARY:"The Slaves' Gamble: Choosing Sides in the War of 1812" program by author Dr. Gene Allen Smith
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe River Raisin National Battlefield Park welcomes author Dr. Gene Allen Smith for an engaging program on his book\, “The Slaves’ Gamble: Choosing Sides in the War of 1812” on Tuesday\, August 8\, 2023 at 7:00p.m. at the River Raisin National Battlefield Park Visitor Center in the Theater. The program is free and open to the public with the support of the River Raisin National Battlefield Park Foundation and La-Z-Boy. \nA Foundation Members Only Meet and Greet Reception with Dr. Smith begins at 6:15pm prior to the presentation. The reception is for members and their guests. Register for reception by emailing: info@battlefieldfoundation.org by August 7. \nDr. Gene Allen Smith is a Professor of History and Director of the Center for Texas Studies at Texas Christian University (TCU). Dr. Smith conducted in-depth research into the War of 1812 and published “The Slaves’ Gamble Choosing Sides in the War of 1812” in 2013. He is presently working on several projects\, including a study of George Washington. Additionally\, Gene recently served his second term as the 2022-23 “Class of 1957 Distinguished Chair of Naval Heritage” at the United States Naval Academy. Gene has published may papers and books and has received internal research awards from Montana State University-Billings and TCU\, as well as fellowships from the Henry E. Huntington Library\, the Virginia Historical Society\, the U.S. Department of the Navy\, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point\, and from the National Endowment for the Humanities. \nPeter Denison is not a house-hold name or well-known hero of the War of 1812. Yet he and other slaves faced important choices about which side to support during the conflict. By following the lives of Denison and other black men\, we learn about the daily struggle all slaves and free men of color faced and the choices they made. How would the young United States respond to the possibility of social and racial unrest. Since black participation could sway military operations\, and potentially alter the outcome of the War of 1812\, it troubled the white Americans and reshaped the way the young republic responded\, ultimately sealing the fate of slaves for the next half century\, until the American Civil War. \nThe River Raisin Trade Depot gift shop will be open with a limited number of copies of the book available for purchase. \nFunding for this program was generously provided by the River Raisin National Battlefield Park Foundation through a generous grant by the La-Z-Boy Foundation. \n             \nSlaves Gamble Flyer

SUMMARY:Spring Muster: Living History Encampment & Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Monroe\, Michigan – The River Raisin National Battlefield Park will be hosting the Friends of the River Raisin Battlefield event Spring Muster: Living History Encampment and Demonstrations on Saturday\, May 20\, 2023\, running from 11am until 4pm. \nExperience history come to life as you walk through the 1812 encampment and displays\, mini militia for kids\, and enjoy the variety of demonstrations\, including black powder firing\, period cooking\, weaving\, gunsmithing and more! The event is free. \nLocation: \nRiver Raisin National Battlefield Park \nVisitor Center Grounds \n333 North Dixie Highway \nMonroe\, MI 48162. \nHistory of the Spring Muster & Anniversary of Captain Herbert Lacroix’s Company of Michigan Volunteers \nAt the start of the War of 1812\, Michigan was defended by small garrisons of U.S. troops\, backed up by the 1st & 2nd Michigan Militia Regiments and the Legionary Corps of Michigan Volunteers.  These forces were soon joined by General Hull’s army of U.S. regulars and Ohio militia volunteers. \nAt the River Raisin\, Hubert Lacroix was elected captain of an 80-man company.  Mustered into service on May 18\, 1812\, Lacroix’s Company became part of the Legionary Corps & was assigned to guard the settlement\, escort the mails\, and help build Hull’s Road to Detroit. Lacroix’s Company participated in General Hull’s opening campaign of the War of 1812\, guiding the army\, and participating in the Battles of Brownstown and Monguagan.  The surrender of General Hull at Detroit on August 16\, 1812 ended Lacroix Company’s official term of service\, although members continued to serve in an ad-hoc manner through the Battles of the River Raisin in January of the following year.

McAfee arrived at the River Raisin months after the battle and recalled:   \n  \n“The bleaching bones still appealed to heaven and called on Kentucky…We had heard the scene described before – we now witnessed it\, in these impressive memorials . . . Future generations will often ponder on this fatal field of blood\, and the future inhabitants of Frenchtown will long point out to the curious traveler…”

SUMMARY:209th Anniversary Commemoration of the Battles of the River Raisin
DESCRIPTION:The 209th Anniversary Commemoration of the Battles of the River Raisin will be held in Monroe\, Michigan on Saturday January 22\, 2022. \n11:00 AM  Tactical Demonstration \n12:00 PM Commemoration Ceremony \nThe Battles of the River Raisin resulted in the greatest victory for Tecumseh’s Confederation and the greatest defeat for the United States during the War of 1812.    Although American forces were victorious in the first battle\, the second ended in what was described as a “national calamity” by then General William Henry Harrison.  The battle cry\, “Remember the Raisin!” inspired a massive U.S. victory at the Battle of the Thames\, which sealed the War of 1812 in the western theater for the U.S.\, claimed the life of the great Shawnee leader\, Tecumseh\, and resulted in the end of the American Indian Confederation.  The Battles directly led to  the implementation of forced Indian removal from the Northwest Territory\, an aftermath that continues to influence the United States today. \n
